Social media is a curse on this world, particularly for youngsters, and I would gladly see it disappear from our lives.
I completely disagree with this, just like a lot of websites it's a very useful tool if used correctly and people are free to use it as much or as little as they want.
Social media is just the next step up from going round someone's house and having a catch up on what they have been up to and them showing you their photo albums from a recent holiday etc. Now with recent restrictions the only way to share these things is online.
I personally don't share anything personal but i do use Facebook and it is very useful for different groups i am in related to hobbies etc.
To say that social media has a detrimental effect on people's lives and is a "curse on this world" sounds like you don't really understand what it is and source your information from exaggerated news headlines.
This site is a form of social media and you seem to be an active user making thousands of posts so even you can see the benefits of it...1 -

No, you wouldn't invite FB friends into your house as most of them are unknown, other than through a click of a mouse. So, it's not like going round someone's house really, it's more like standing outside in the dark looking through the windows.
You can interact with groups without, FB so it's not an essential tool.
Great if you like it and don't have a problem with it, but, don't think that those who don't use it, don't understand it.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

All of my FB friends are certainly known to me and i have met all but one in person and socialised with them. I wouldn't add anyone i didn't know and people can choose to do that if they wish but it certainly isn't something they have to do at all so I'm not sure why you would presume they are unknown?.
Yes FB isn't essential but there is nowhere else online where there are groups that are active as FB one's for certain things. It is extremely useful if you want to discuss hobbies and interact with groups discussing things happening in the local area and local businesses. I get a lot of good information from it that i wouldn't be able to get elsewhere.
Now if you were talking about Instagram where it is more about posting staged images to make you look good and getting lots of strangers to follow you so you can become more popular then some of your comments may make sense. But i personally don't use Instagram and considering it is completely voluntary then i don't see a problem with it.
So personally i would say you don't really understand much about social media because you have lumped it all into one thing. I'm not saying that's a problem to not have any interest in it, i just don't think people like Neil49 should be posting on a forum (which like i said is also social media) and then condemn all social media for being a "curse on this world" when he doesn't really seem to understand it.1 -

You are wrong again in thinking we don't understand much about social media. The very title 'Social Media' means that everything is lumped into one thing, it doesn't refer to any individual platform. So much for you understanding it.
The idea of FB was, in the most part a good one, unfortunately it has become a cesspit containing a large amount of societies dross. Yes, there are sensible people on there, I guess you would class yourself in that, however, for the unwary, innocent and thick, it has become a bit of a quagmire with scams being just one negative lurking therein to snare them.
You are right, this forum and others could, possibly, be classed as 'Social Media', however, I would venture that compared to FB etc. you know very little about the posters.
FB is no different to Instagram, Twitter etc, people collect 'Friends' and shout about how many they have and post posed pictures.
Long may you enjoy your FB experience and as long as you keep it limited to people you actually know and trust, I'm sure you won't have any problems.
So, please excuse those of us who choose to no longer participate because we see it differently. It's not about people not using it if they choose, rather pointing out that there are major problems and dangers.

The point I'm making is that there is many different social media platforms and you chose to specifically talk about Facebook when what you were saying doesn't really fully apply to that and you don't seem to acknowledge there are differences and not knowing the differences and saying it's all bad is exactly what Neil49 did in his post without justification.RumRat said:The idea of FB was, in the most part a good one, unfortunately it has become a cesspit containing a large amount of societies dross. Facebook is encouraging users to use 'Fan Pages' which breaches the 5000 limit on friends, making it the same as the other platforms. People and brands compete for 'Likes' as the other platforms do and followers can reach the millions....I think Ronaldo has around 150 million followers on FB.
It would seem that you 'need to know what you don't know' before declaring anything.....Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Well people "like" or "follow" pages and those are made in addition to the profile you create when you sign up so that is not something you need to participate in if you choose not too when using Facebook. These pages also don't have any content from your personal profile unless you choose to share it, so you could make an anonymous page on any subject that people won't know was made by you if you chose to do so.
But the main purpose of Facebook is to make a profile and connect to friends and groups of your choosing. Just because it's possible to set everything to public and make pages to share your content with millions doesn't mean you have too.
Just because Facebook has some features you don't like doesn't mean you have to condemn the whole platform and just because it shares some features with other Platforms doesn't mean that it's the same.
A Bike, Car, Bus and Train are "the same" in that they all use rotating wheels to move and are all under the category of land transport. But if someone started saying that they are all the same then I'm sure few people would agree because they all have different benefits and drawbacks and you can't apply the same thinking to all of them.1 -
