Boiler diagnosed with a faulty photo cell.
Dodgy part replaced & boiler igniting again.
Even better is the fact that the boiler is now behaving in tandem with the thermostat as it should. :-)
From what I've googled - one of the symptoms of dodgy photo cell is that the boiler can randomly start & stop so looks as if that is what was causing the problem I initially described.
I'm lucky that it failed completely yesterday - if it kept hanging in there I'd have spent a good bit longer trying to diagnose / fix the problem before admitting defeat & calling in a professional.
