Maybe the auction runs until they make enough money?

I've seen it at penny auctions, copart,  and that bumblebee Police auction, if you bid in the last few seconds like you do on eBay, there is an automatic extension to try and get higher bids to come back from the mug who already bid what they thought it was worth before, but not usually days.
