The thing is we have nothing to sell and we are holding the chain in place and therefore paying rent to wait for others who don't want to go into rented.
I don't want to be paying for others people who don't want any discomfort in their lives, at my expense. My assumption to begin with was that our vendors would of course move out into rented,
On the flip side why should the sellers move into rented accommodation to save money for you at their expense? They would be tied into potentially a 12 month contract, you also don't know their circumstances, they may have pets and be limited to a very few places that would accept them. You either need to be patient and accept you are in a chain and this is what happens or buy a property that is no chain but you still cannot guarantee a no chain property will be a fast move, hiccups can happen anywhere. Unfortunately this is how it is.

i do not want to spend hundreds of pounds retaining people I might not need.
I know our vendors don't want to break our chain and go into rented, but I'm not happy sitting in rented while everyone else is comfortably waiting and in no rush.

Sadly this is the process !
I'd never move into rented with my children and dog.
We had a 3 house chain collapse 2 days before Christmas. It was horrible and over a grand wasted.
Nothing you can do. If you want the house you'll need to accept it.
Expecting others to accommodate you and your circumstances is unreasonable sadly.

Greatcrested - thank you for your advice. We're having a full structural survey so I know it will take a lot of time - some of it on our part - but I do feel that at least the chain should have an end point before we pay anything upfront. You're right though I don't know the full position.
This is agree with. I'd not instruct or pay anything until the chain is complete.
Spell that out to your EA and the vendors EA.
Things fall apart to easily to chuck your money away
  • Still no update about how many are in the chain, or what their status is. As far as we know, there could be ten, with the top of the chain still looking!
If I knew what was happening I could make a fair decision, but I don't.
If I don't hear tomorrow, we will start looking again. Unfortunately that means the whole chain will collapse.
Just a bit of info would suffice so that we know whether and when to instruct out solicitors etc.

I agree but I'm seeing this from the other side. I/we are waiting in rented, with no way forward by the looks of things, to accommodate people who apparently are 'desperate' to sell. I think they will just need to find a third buyer, who is more accommodating and happy to wait longer. Will wait to see what happens tomorrow.
  • If your a chain free buyer then you are in a stronger position to buy then someone else who is not and if you enter a chain you have to wait around for everyone else like you have said and continue renting, I would be looking at properties which are chain free and a seller would much rather sell to you then a buyer who needs to wait for a chain to complete.

I think you are right. We chose this one because initially we were told there was only three people in the chain

We chased our vendors agent (again) today, she was still not sure so i said i was getting itchy feet! Hey presto an hour later Ive been told our vendors vendor will move into rented (obviously can't ever be sure!!!) she's now pushing us to be ready by end March, which is fine by us.

So only three in chain as far as I can see. We need a full survey though so that's the next stress.
