Unable to retrieve deposit

A year ago We booked a 5 day all in January break to Claremont Hotel (Choice Hotels) Blackpool. Obviously this cannot go ahead this January. Choice Hotels are operating skeleton staff so not replying to calls or emails? An automated voice message tells us they are keeping hold of our deposit until later in the year. Surely this isn't their decision to make? We don't want to go later in the year. We booked January as it's my birthday and we work all Xmas and New Year so this was our break. Where do we stand with refund? Particularly as they aren't answering emails? Any ideas please?

Is the Hotel actually open ?
If you paid by Debit or Credit Card you might well find they answer to a Chargeback.0 -

Was it just recently that you tried calling and sending emails?
I am sure they will get back to you and the message about holding your deposit is probably just a general reassurance one to indicate that you are not losing anything in the meantime.
When you get hold of them politely ask for the refund if that is what you want.
