Peeling paint

Options
Hi all. Happy new year. I hope you have all been keeping well.

I'm having a bit of a problem. I mentioned the OH that I wanted to repaint the living  room and he went to buy paint. I prefer it silky (so I can wipe down kids finger prints etc  every so often). He bought (unknowingly) a matt finish and painted the whole place in a few days while I was sick in bed. But when we realised it was matt, I then ordered this paint..

https://www.screwfix.com/p/leyland-trade-silk-emulsion-brilliant-white-10ltr/91723

Because we had the matt underneath we preceded in repainting the walls.

But now the paint is peeling like its a soft skin?! I've never had this happen before- and I've painted with my dad for nearly 25 years. And I've always used silk emulsion. Never seen this happen. Anyhow I'm now peeling it all off and then going to repaint.

Can anyone help me firstly figure out why that happened? And secondly tell me if I need to do anything before I repaint over the matt so this doesn't happen again?

I'm so bummed 😞.

Thank you so much in advance.

What exactly is peeling? The top layer or both?

Hi, yes. Prepped, sugar soaped, sanded slightly over the silk from before and wiped.

I've asked him what paint he got it was the Leyland contract matt paint.

Its the top layer of contract silk peeling off the contract  matt.
  • Blimey, that's unusual.

I wouldn't have been so surprised had the paints been applied the other way a round - 'silk' finishes are harder to adhere to.

Sounds like a 'mare, and could be to sort out. I hope someone comes on here with a trick to overcome this.

I have to say, tho', that silk on walls is just hellish. What were you thinking of, woman :-)  There are very durable 'matts' out there - I'll try and find a link to one I was looking at a few days ago; it was 10 times more durable that normal paints or summat.

If you want a cheat - but I ain't guaranteeing it'll work - you could try Sandtex ultra-smooth brill white masonry paint. Might seem crazy, but it sticks to pretty much anything, is very tough and durable, and is virtually matt finish. It might do the trick, but it won't be an 'approved' way of sorting this.

I know! I think the contract matt is the problem really. I started to peel it and have found that the silk im peeling is powdery on the underside where its sitting on the matt.

Think I just thought to use silk because I always have. In hindsight I could have done a little more research. Last time I painted was 5 years ago. We did it in silk emulsion. So figured I'd do the same this time. But then the matt came in the way.

Got my kids to help. And we've got about half the living room peeled. So maybe this weekend we'll get the rest done. Need to wipe off the matt (yep, its literally wiping off) maybe its because it's the cheap stuff?

    Ergh im so annoyed
Will have a look at this white masonary.  But really I feel like its going to have to be peeled off and started again.

Please let me know of the other paint too!

  • Sounds as tho' it's coming off ok, but what a hassle. Yes, I'd suspect the base coat was to blame as well, although Leyland contract matt should have been absolutely fine - it's a respected brand.

I wonder if the first matt coat was just not fully dry, so 'reactivated' with the silk making it come unstuck from the wall?

If you manage to get it all off, and ensure the wall surface is prepared well, then best to go with 'proper' paint and not my Sandtex idea! That was just a 'get out of jail' type solution which can work, but is not 'usual'.

I can't remember the exact paint I was reading about before - it could have been Dulux Diamond-hard - but there are plenty of 'scrubbable' wall paints out there, eg:

But I have had no experience of them myself.
