Who knows? There is a risk of this happening, and it may actually apply to the South African new variant, which is why they are trying hard to keep any more of it out of the UK. It may end up like the flu jab, where they try to guess which flu strains will be prevalent in any year, and adapt the flu vaccine accordingly.
  • Studies show already that the vaccine is working against the mutant strains in lab tests

Protection will be time limited in any event. Like flu. Covid is here to stay.

Not totally like flu, the flu immunisation stops working because influenza mutates rapidly, so the vaccination still provides protection for the version it was supposed to, it is just that there are new versions around. With Coronaviruses we are unsure if the vaccines will offer lasting immunity (some vaccinations do not), or if the virus will mutate in a way which stops current vaccines being effective, with high transmission rates that is much more likely as there are more mutations taking place
