Contribution Towards Shared Garden Wall

Hi all,

Just after a bit of advice. My neighbour is currently building an extension and also a rear building which comes up to our boundary. In between the two builds is a run of around 30-35m fence panels. He discussed with me about replacing the panels with a brick wall, so then it’s just a straight run of bricks between the two buildings. I said It would be expensive but happy to put a contribution towards the works. We discussed briefly that he would pay for majority of it and my contribution would be roughly the equivalent of a brick wall for 5 fence panels.

My neighbours actually an ok guy and I reckon he'd probably pay it himself even if I had said no, but I'd like to pay my share (I think technically that side is my responsibility). I figure long term I could build a large shed/ outbuilding off that wall as well.

What I’m trying to work out is what I should budget as a maximum for my contribution, If I were to erect a brick wall in place of 5 fence panels.

I figure the costs associated would be to:

·         Dig the footings 600mm wide by 750mm deep x 10m (5 x 1.82)

·         Fill with concrete up to 500mm

·         Materials: Standards brick and mortar for a brick wall of 1.8m high/ Double skinned and 10m long

·         Labour costs for bricky.

Can anyone suggest a ball park figure of what I should budget for my contribution based on the costs associated to the measurements above? I don’t want to take advantage of the guy by setting my contribution too low, but at the same time I want to be fair about it and pay a reasonable share.

Thanks.
