@Sandtree It isn’t showing the location of both AirPods, only the right one. It doesn’t even have options for ‘left’ and ‘right’ (which it should!). I rang Apple support last night. The first guy didn’t know so they got someone more senior to ring me but they hadn’t a clue either. I sent screenshots and they just said it was ‘very strange’ and that ‘it should show options for both’. I know it should but it doesn’t. His advice was ‘Once you find it, it should pick up the signal again’.
The previously linked article says to put the one you have in its case which stops it responding to the Find My and therefore a response would only come from the second however I dont think this will help you with the map when there is a lost connection.

There are online stories of those losing one, putting the remaining one in the case, activating the sound (which then shows as pending) and retracing their steps and if you pass within the 240m (or whatever the pair range is) then the lost one will start to ping.

Unfortunately, neither of these options work as ‘Find My’ doesn’t show the individual AirPods, so when I put one in the case, it can’t detect any. When I take that one out of the case, it thinks I have taken both out. I’ve retraced my steps twice now, with the sound activated, but it still thinks I have both together so it just gives the location of wherever I am standing.

I dont have AirPods (or an iPhone for that matter these days but do have to provide IT support for my wife's) but the proposed solution is to set the sound going with the other one in the case (it wont sound) then go for your retrace the steps and listen for the sound it should make.

Of cause if the local wildlife has already found it and stolen it then the process won't work and you're back to buying a single replacement.

Yes, I know it’s meant to work that way but mine doesn’t. It just assumes both are in the case. The sound goes off when I take that single one out of the case and I get a message ‘Your AirPods have been found’. It’s like it can’t separate them.

I’ve rang Apple for a replacement and they’ve sent an email for me to pay and complete the order. I’m going to hold off until tomorrow so I can have one last check, retracing my steps again (for the third time!). It’s quite expensive. £65 and also a £12 fee for customs/taxes, which I guess is something to do with brexit.

    Or VAT (20% of £65 is £13)?

He said the VAT was part of the £65 but maybe he’s wrong. He seemed very surprised by this fee, as if he’d never come across it before, which is why I was curious.

AFAIK the new rules state that Customs duty is payable on goods exceeding £135, then it's normally collected by the delivery agent. For example, Royal Mail will charge you a fee of £8 for this privilege...You cannot receive your goods until you have paid it.  But, of course, we are all better off.. ;):p
So, as Chino says, he's confused and they, probably, now list the VAT separately to their prices on his system..

@RumRat Thanks for the link 😁. That’ll save a lot. I never thought to check eBay. I’m always wary of fakes but the seller has good reviews.

You’re probably right about the VAT charge. I’ve just been hearing a lot of complaints from people here recently, about having to pay much higher delivery fees and new customs charges since brexit. I’m in Northern Ireland. I don’t understand it all but I’ve had a few deliveries cancelled that were coming from England and one from France so it’s definitely making things awkward.

Ah, there are different import rules and payments for NI now which may have been the reason for the extra charge.
