Don't know about branches but I believe you can do CHAPS transfers over the telephone with HSBC..0

not sure i'd trust them on the phone for 100k....0

I thought they had many checks to do before sending large sums like proof of funds etc. etc.
I can't see how they can do these during a phone call.0 -

Its safer now that they do name matches on the recipients bank account, so should flag up if any issues over misheard digits on account details0

If they were worried about proof of funds in your account, you would certainly know about it - they would most likely freeze your account.0

- the recipient bank / institution participates in the COP processing. Only the main banks, and very few building societies do
- the recipient account can be uniquely identified by a sort code and account number. Cillions of savings accounts are uniquely identified by sort code, account number plus a reference number.

I would think that an appointment would not be necessary for a CHAPS payment.
They would normally be done by the counter staff or customer services.
Can we ask for which purpose you want to make the payment.
Reason I ask is that with a lot of offices etc shut or working from home it would be an ideal time for a fraudster to try it on.
Make sure the payment is genuine - take 2 forms of id with you plus your HSBC debit card.
The bank may ask for proof of why you are making the transaction so take that with you too.0
