Gas - m3 to KWH calculation and very high usage

Does anyone know if the measured quantity and the cost calculation is identical across all suppliers (obviously subject to calorific value changes) ? I need to calculate the cost of the gas we're using before i get a bill.

I'm asking because we moved into a new house (new build EPC B) and comparing my energy consumption since November against my previous property shows a very similar electricity usage but a VASTLY higher gas usage (about 1.2 m3/day last December vs 4.3 m3/day for Nov/Dec). So assuming that the meter is measuring the same thing using the same gas we're spending around £5 a day on gas !!

Calc i'm using is...
volume x imperial rate x calorific value x volume correction / 3.6 = kWh
15 m3 x 2.83 x 39 x 1.02264 / 3.6 = 470.28   which at 2.807p is £13.20 for 3 days use....

You're using the procedure for a reading in (hundreds of) cubic feet.

Your old house might have an Imperial meter; you new one a metric meter.  That introduces a factor of 3.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Cubic metres multiplied by 11 is good enough conversion to kwh for fag packet estimates.
    15 x 11 is 165 x 2.807p

£4.63 plus standing charge and VAT.

    To check imperial £4.63 x 2.83 £13.10, not far off £13.20!!

    If it's 15m3 x 11 x 2.807p  =  £4.63  , which is £1.54/day then i'm not so frightened considering it's damned cold...
But your comment about checking imperial values has confused me.

It's like worrying that you'll be busted for driving at 80kph in a 50mph zone.
  • For what it's worth the meter is this ...  which is metric

Which model of L&G meter is it? There's an interesting Rogue meters thread!
  • Hi,
so it's a metric meter (m3), you don't need the (x 2.83) in your calculation,
    15 m3 x 2.83 x 39 x 1.02264 / 3.6 = 470.28   which at 2.807p is £13.20 for 3 days use....
    remove the ( x 2.83) you get £4.66.
