Credit File and Paypal

Has anyone ever seen a ref to their Paypal account on their credit file? I have used a PP account for years and checked my credit file for years - no sign of Paypal anywhere. Does this mean the credit ref agencies are not bothered?

  • Do you have a line of credit with PayPal?

I believe they deal mainly (or exclusively?) with TransUnion.

Obtain your statutory Transunion credit file online free of charge and see if there's any mention of it there.

That is assuming you actually have a line of credit with paypal. If you don't, there's nothing to appear on your credit file.

It's not that the CRAs are not bothered.  It's whether PayPal report your product or not.

Their websites says that CRAs checks will/may be carried out for PayPal Credit.

Then there's nothing for them to report to the credit reference agencies; you don't have a credit account with them.

TransUnion are a UK credit reference agency, they took over Call Credit. They are the credit reference agency PayPal deal with in the UK - in relation to PayPal Credit.
  • I've never asked PP for credit. However in the UK all my bank accts are listed on my credit file whether I have asked for credit or not.

Your PayPal account isn't a bank account. It won't appear on your credit file.

Only PayPal credit would, as that's an agreement regulated under the Consumer Credit Act 1974.
  • My Paypal account has a sort code and an account number. I thought that categorised it as a bank account?

You can't go overdrawn on your Paypal account.

Paypal are at liberty to chose whether or not they report conduct of your account with them to credit reference agencies, and which ones, if any. They're under no obligation to. We can't tell you any more than that as we aren't paypal.

My PayPal account has never appeared on my credit file and I wouldn't expect it to as it doesn't fall into any of the categories of account currently supported by UK credit reference agencies.

Does anyone else's paypal account have a sort code and acocunt number here?

Paypal have always been a payment vehicle rather than an independantly functioning account.
  • There is an option within "Wallet" Add Money. Maybe the sort code & account nbr are referring to the whole of Paypal? I assumed it was my details? It does not make that very clear on the screen. Perhaps "Customer Reference" is my ID and not the sort code/acct number? In which case, yes I can see that it is not a bank account. I have asked Paypal to clarify.
