Bank transfer verification

Options
I'm trying to set up a bank transfer to pay a Barclaycard credit card bill from my Santander current account.  The statement gives all the details - sort code, account number and payment reference but not the title of their receiving account.
I've tried Barclaycard and Barclays Bank UK but get a message  "We can't verify the details you entered because the bank or account you want to pay isn't part of the payee checking service."  I find this hard to believe - can anyone tell me what to enter?

You can enter anything you like, e.g. "My Barclaycard". In the likely event that you get a mismatch, you can just accept it and proceed anyway. The only data the bank uses for the payment is the sort code, account number, and reference. Also, the COP checking only checks sort code and account number, not the reference. So they would never be able to confirm that the payment is for your Barclaycard.

If you want to be certain that you typed the sort code, account number and reference correctly, just send a small test payment first, to verify that the money arrives in the correct place. Then used the stored payment detail to may your remaining payment(s).

    Alternatively
    1. pay your Barclaycard in the Barclaycard app/online using your debit card, or
    2. give Barclays a Direct Debit authority to take the payments from your current account

I don’t know about Santander, but Nationwide wouldn’t let my mum transfer money to her Coventry BS savings account because the names did not match exactly. There was no facility to override the name mismatch. Could be the same with Santander. No such problem with NatWest.

I don't use Santander but would be amazed if Barclaycard wasn't already in their drop-down list of commercial payees (as opposed to entering yourself as a personal payee).

I don't believe Santander has any dropdown for businesses - you need to enter the sort code and account number as for personal accounts.

But even if they did have a dropdown, they would not have a dropdown for a person's Barclaycard number, which has to be entered in the Reference field, and which will not be checked by the Confirmation Of Payee routine.

This is not true. All banks allow you to overwrite the confirmation of payee checks

Here‘s how you overwrite it in Nationwide

Hmm. This example seems to be from a mobile app. I helped my mum when transferring the money using a browser on a desktop. I didn’t see any facility to override the name check. Might have been there but I didn’t see it. Might find this override facility next time I help her transfer some money.

It's there, and has always been there, in Nationwide online banking, too. My example below is for a personal account, but processing for business accounts is the same. It's also the same whether you set up the payee without making a payment, or set up the payee as part of making a payment. It's impossible to overlook the warnings, and the option to overwrite it.

    Put your name.
If that doesn't work, ring up Santander and Barclaycard and annoy them until you get an answer.

colsten - the OP is asking about the account name, not the reference field/card number.  COP is first and foremost a name-check service. (Although I didn't think HOCA/utility/credit card accounts were included in the current COP phase)

Ringing Santander and Barclaycard “to annoy them” is the most unconstructive advice I have seen on this forum.

I've seen other advice on the forum and think that's unlikely. I do accept it might have been a bit too informal/shorthand - but the serious point is to press for the information that the banks should be capable of providing.

It is incumbent on Barclaycard to provide the appropriate beneficiary details (i.e. account name) for a successful COP, or to confirm they are not participating in COP as a receiver. And incumbent on SanUK to confirm how their implementation of COP works i.e. if the receiving account is not COP-able, then is it possible to send a payment there if using the mobile app.
