Here is something you could try but no guarantee it will work. You only have to top up a prepayment meter IF the meter has a unit rate that is not zero. There is nothing that I am aware of, other than suppliers systems, from setting the rate to zero which makes it the same as a credit meter.
I'm now  wondering if Neon Reef would take on my SSE electric  key meter (it's dual rate, but that's not a problem for Neon)
Why not switch today?  What's the worst that can happen?
If you report success in three weeks' time then it will help others.

Because according to a post on another thread it would need SSE to change all three prices to zero beforehand, as Neon would be unable to do this. The old MSE forum would let me copy that post in here but the new one won't even tell me what post number it is on this page

(it's the longest one from Shedman).

Just to clarify, mine isn't a complex E7 meter of the type that Tastyhog described.

That assumption may well be the case, but presumably there is a chance that SSE would play ball, or that Neon Reef / SSE may find another procedure that delivers a result.  If you start the switch and it fails then surely you'd be no worse off?  If it's blocked you can then start a formal complaint procedure, so I can't see why it's not worth a go.

Well for a start I don't want to risk having to waste 30-odd kilowatt-hours of electricity like Shedman & stepdaughter did in order to get a working meter! (I'm stumped as to why SSE would make them do this as a condition).  But why have you overlooked the obvious risk of ending up with a useless prepayment meter that Neon can't zero and SSE won't??
I think it far safer to proceed as per  https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/78160086/#Comment_78160086
(on the superior v-bulletin forum, you could quote, highlight then copy a whole post and just paste it into any other thread. Here, you just get the link.)

Doing it that way ensures I'm not forced to have a new meter; if SSE won't  keep an existing customer happy,  then I'll know for sure that they won't do it for one who's decided to move to Neon Reef.
