Whats the consensus on how long a TV should last?

  • OK. Thanks all, a bit of experimentation has revealed that 'Movie' mode mostly covers up the problem.  From comments online it sounds like it might be a mainboard issue rather than a panel issue but if that's the case then I'm wondering if there might be a firmware patch.
Looks like I can't get a 4K TV in the same size as our existing one anymore, had the same issue when I bought this one, couldn't get a spec to match the old one at the same size so ended up going bigger.  I'd either have to go bigger again or go for lower spec, I think I'll probably see if it worsens in the next couple of weeks before I decide to commit to a bigger TV.

FWIW there's no need to go to 4K for 40".  1080 full HD is more than adequate.
If you do choose to go to a larger screen, then the overall dimensions may not be any larger if the frame / surround is now smaller.

I would expect a TV to last at least 5 years, probably up to 10.

Surely it depends how much it is watched??

My Sony Bravia is 19 years old and refuses to die!
My Sony Bravia is 13 years old too :)

We bought an LG 42 in tv in 2008.  It works as well today as the day we bought it.  That was the year we retired and it does get used a lot.  Can’t remember what it cost but we bought it as an ex display model in Makro.  (We had a Makro card at the time).

We’ll keep it til it goes to tv heaven even though it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles.  We’ve saved enough money in 2020, because of the Covid restrictions, to buy a decent tv when the time comes.
