It should be a straightforward job - bolts out, cover off, clean up, new seal in, torque up. Don't over-tighten...
Some 'goop' is really good these days Ade and has replaced gaskets and rubber seals in many applications from an OE manufacturing perspective. I appreciate the layman will not be familiar with modern manufacturing processes, but there have been many advances in recent years. TV programs such as 'how its made' might give some insight and often feature car manufacturing plants
