  • Did I ever mention, Homer, that I quite fancy you?

(did I say that out loud?)
  • Thanks so much everyone !
Ahh a float of course - I had never really looked into the Cistern of this toilet since I know longer chuck those blue bars in that turn the water blue. I remember the round floats so this one confused me abit when I saw it.

Thanks again - we will get a new valve as soon as we can and give it a go. I will let you know how I get on.
Thanks again you have been so helpful !

  • Hi
I’m not sure if anyone will see this now but I picked up the valve yesterday from screwfix. It took a while to be able to go there, we were just shutting off the water when it wasn’t needed in the meantime!

I did accidentally get the pro version but hope this doesn’t matter (with me not being a pro!)

I fitted it about an hour ago and all seems well so far (thanks so much for helping!) but I do just have a couple of questions I hope you don’t mind:

It mentions that the critical level mark should be at least 1 inch above the overflow pipe but I can’t see the over flow pipe in our cistern?! Is it covered? I have attached a picture and I don’t think the water fills high enough so think I may need to start again and raise the valve higher (I had tried to adjust height to the same height as the one I removed before I fitted it)

Also the last step is to “always clear  debris from water line to compete installation” which involves removing the valve top! Is this necessary or because I got the pro version! It looks complicated.

    Thanks again all !

I do not think you have an overflow pipe on your tank ,they are normally a plastic pipe which exits the side of the tank ABOVE the water line and runs into the same pipe as the contents of the toilet flushes into. I  also think that the critical water level would be 1 inch BELOW the overflow pipe ,
What you might have is an overflow that is linked to the siphon pump ( the bit that flushed the toilet when you push down on the handle ) .Great to see you have been given great advice on this site from others.

It looks about the right level to me, maybe slightly low. As long as it's easy to flush and doesn't overflow into the pan then it will be fine.

It's good practice to clear out debris from the line, but this is really more relevant for complete new installations where there's more chance of bits in the pipe work. You should be ok without it.

If everything's working as it should, sit down and enjoy!
  • Thank you ! It flushes ok so far

haha I will enjoy, I forgot how nice it is to not have the toilet overflowing when you turn on a tap downstairs or use the dishwasher etc!
Thanks so much to everyone who has helped, I really appreciate it - I thought the issue was going to be an expensive one to fix

    thanks again, I’m so chuffed!

  • That's an excellent result, Lucy - you should be chuffed.

And thanks for coming back with the update - it makes a world of difference.

If you find it doesn't flush as well as you like, then you can raise that water level a fair bit by the looks of it. Of course, if you are on a meter, then...

As said above, the overflow seems to be built in to the syphon part, 'cos there ain't a separate one.
  • I wanted to come back and say thanks - what a great forum!

Haha we do have a metre and it flushes good so I will leave as is for now!
    Thanks 😊
  • Yup - a metre of water should shift anything :-)
  • Oops, my plumbing skills are better than my spelling skills !
