Storing the date properly within Excel means you can be very flexible withe the displayed format yet the cell contents retain the coded date (the date and time serial number) allowing you to do things like calculations if required on the cell content or to produce the cell contents, cope with different numbers of days in a month at, a later date and copy paste to lengthen a list, change the displayed format etc. Just entering a cardinal day number with suffix to produce an ordinal number, all as text, severely limits you.
