I wanted an exchange but got a refund...

I bought some light bulbs on the Internet and some of them lasted a few hours, flickered, then died. Pretty simple so far.
Email trail with supplier shows me asking for an exchange, I then receive a postal label which I duly used. I then ask some time later where my replacement bulbs are and I'm told I was actually refunded.
If I buy identical bulbs, I'm going to be stung on delivery charges. Do I have the legal right to demand an exchange? I think do - I'm even happy to return what I was refunded, but I want to check first!

  • No, the retailer can choose to refund, exchange or repair. Did you not receive a refund for the shipping you originally paid?

They refunded me the price of the two bulbs faulty - there were six in total bought.
  • You could have sent the whole lot back for a full refund and bought them again, but sending only the faulty ones back has given the retailer the option.  I assume the postal charge they levy for an order of six is the same as they'd charge for an order of two?
  • If two out of six bulbs only lasted a few hours, that's indicative of either a bad batch or more likely, just low quality bulbs and using the refund to buy a different brand might be a good idea.
  • Having two twelve month old babies to care for may have impacted my ability to think ahead given we needed to change to dimmables in that room urgently. Things have not turned out well.
According to the the email thread I had with them, they offered me an exchange or a refund. I opted for an exchange and I received a refund. I also enquired whether I had picked a poor quality bulb and was told they were covered by a five-year manufacturer's guarantee.
What more can I say or do? I actually feel pretty annoyed at being no further forward.
  • How much is the postage for two new bulbs?
  • Urgent dimmable bulbs....really?

To be honest , I would just move on. If that's all you have to worry about when you have two babies you are gonna have a great worry free life.
