Are kitchen taps usually standard sizes and how much is it to replace something like this?

Hi there,
I've been trying to get a property I'm moving in to up to scratch and am gradually getting things completed. One thing that seems a touch faulty is the kitchen taps. One side seems to leak water from under the 'turning' bit of the tap and from the looks of it, it needs  a good clean and is ancient.
I was looking at kitchen taps online and they don't really seem to have sizes on the description. Would I be right in thinking it's a standard size?
I have no idea how many holes it uses but took some photos of the tap and the bits underneath (I tried to get my camera under the tap itself but not sure if it'll highlight anything to anyone).
Just hoping a kind contributor can tell whether the photos show a standard type of tap and whether the tap I randomly searched for in toolstation would do the trick. The measurement of the part connected to the sink is around 23cm x5cm if treated as a rectangle.

part 2 of the question would be do I get a handyman or plumber for the replacement of the tap and rough expected budget for the install? I I had the money I'd probably replace the whole sink but for now a tap and some cleaning will suffice

Would be fantastic if anyone can help and happy to take any recommendations. Thanks in advance!

My first thought re leak would be a washer needs replacing in the tap.  So either get handyman in to do it or have a go yourself - loads of how to videos out there. Then if that fixes it, give it all a good clean and keep using them.  Only if that doesnt resolve the issue would I look to replace the taps but new taps on old sink could look odd.

    Look at this video,
I know it is showing a stop tap but the workings are the same,
if you carefully lever up the cap on top of the tap handle and undo the little screw underneath, the tap handle will pull off maybe with a little wiggle.
Then just copy what he does on the video.

  • Thanks for that, I am not entirely sure I have diagnosed the problem properly. I haven't moved in yet so just on my last visit (as these measures are interrupting everything) I took the photos and checked it. When I turn on the tap on the left, there is water that pools up around 11 o clock looking down on the tap. I am not sure if it is coming out from where the tap cap meets the tap base attached to the sink, or it is coming out from under the base/mount part at the 11 o clock position. Although it could well be the same fault.
Whilst it's great to know there is a potential solution, and I'll definitely have a go at removing that part to understand it (at least before purchasing the tap kit), it would also be very handy to know as a last resort the answer to my initial questions
    1) is it a standard size that I just buy like the one in the link, or is there something I should keep in mind
    2) Is a handyman qualified to do it or does it need a plumber, and what kind of labour charge seems fair?

This way at least I'll have the initial strategy but will be aware of the backup.

.  Only if that doesnt resolve the issue would I look to replace the taps but new taps on old sink could look odd.

I guess if I replace any part it will look slightly odd, but I am hoping there's something in poundland or wherever that can just scrub a sink shiny or polish it.

    Thanks again to everyone.
  • Hi,
first thing to do, with tap closed, prise off the centre disc and remove knob, now open tap slowly, might need pliers, you should now see where the problem is, and can then plan accordingly.

yes that tap should fit ok, I just fitted  a tap like that took me about an hour, ( I'm not a plumber but handy with spanners).  so suggest quotes on that time or local handy man, might be cheaper to live there awhile and get a list of related job to reduce call out charges. ( so far in 10 days I have fixed 2 small water leaks, removed a broken hot water temp limiter, replaced leaking immersion heater, & replaced 2 broken light switches & 1 double socket, only moved in 11 days ago, not trying to worry you its just how it is...
