reducing AIV file size and converting to MP4

Hi,
I have been converting some VHS to MP4 using Climaxdigital and its all been going well until I got to some black and white film. Climaxdigital software does not cope with black and white, but their support gave me a link to download a different software. This has captured my film but in Microsoft AIV format and my 10 minutes of film is 7GB in size!
I would like to get it into a small MP4 file but have not idea how. Anyone have any recommendations of free software to do this. I am not very tech savvy, its taken me a long time to get this far!

I've always used HandBrake in the times I've needed to convert video files.

Second vote for HandBrake - you can choose the quality of encoding and therefore the resulting file size.

Yes, Handbrake will do it to whatever format you like.
