Tax Return

Options

HI Guys
I'm looking for some clarification on a back dated issue
For the 2018-2019 tax year I was the director of a limited company. I only received PAYE which was a minimal amount that meant there was no tax or national insurance payments due. I took no dividend payments or had any other forms of income.
Am I correct in thinking I did not have to file a self assessment tax return for this year?

HMRC should have sent you a letter confirming that you need complete a tax return if you do. You can also check online or by calling HMRC. I would call them if you don't already have online access. Although it will take a while to get through, getting online takes time. The deadline for paper filing has passed, so I hope you have online access already as I expect that HMRC will want you to complete a self-assessment tax return.

If you call them and explain your change of circumstances, they may agree on the phone that you don't need to complete a tax return. I would be best to try to get some confirmation of this, but I've no idea what HMRC representatives on the phones can do for you in this respect.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

so you had no other income at all 18/19?
the requirement to file a tax return simply because you are a director has been challenged and is no longer considered to be valid.

I appreciate your post states "or had any other forms of income" so on that basis you received less than £8,424 income in 18/19 (annualised NI threshold given your director status) from your company and therefore have no requirement to file self assessment as there is no tax to pay

as an aside, are you comfortable with your pension arrangements given you may not have a state pension qualifying year depending whether your PAYE was above the LEL or not?
