Compensation “Turkey”

I wanted this Christmas to be special as a family member was diagnosed with Terminal bowel cancer 2 weeks before Christmas. My parents who live 50 miles away treated me to a hamper which included a frozen turkey crown, my father was desperate for us to have a lovely day including treats that my budget doesn’t stretch too. They wanted Us to have lasting memories of Christmas Day. This was actually the worst Christmas possible,
I defrosted the turkey Christmas Eve, I removed the packaging and to my horror it was apparent this bird had a terrible death, heavily bruised and blood clots surrounding its thigh bone. It made me sick to the stomach thinking about what had happened to it.
I took photos including the packaging and bar code, the smell wasn’t good either. I called customer service straight away (4.55pm) sadly the help lines were closed. I couldn’t even find the local stores number, and nor did I have any transport to exchange the turkey but the store was only open for another 15 minutes
I contacted the store via Face Book, asking what I do this situation with being unable to return it.
On Monday (Bank Holiday) I was asked by a lady from the store to provide photos and a description of what the problem was via messenger.
Im now informed that I need my receipt but unfortunately i don’t have, they need the packaging which I feel is totally unpractical given the smell. They have the photos supporting it was bought from the as I’ve the bar code picture.

I would imagine my turkey costs between £12 & £15. My issue I have is the rest of my food such as vegetables, trimmings weren’t used so I disposed of them, some of them weren’t purchased from the store.
Compensating me for a bird is unacceptable given how my day was ruined especially with the thought of how this poor turkey spent its last hours. The bruising is red so it’s my understanding that the time of injury was probably 5 minutes before slaughter.
Does £12 compensation feel acceptable???

  • Off topic, but I find it amusing that a question about a turkey was answered by a duck!

They can only compensate your father (the actual purchaser) for his actual losses,  not your losses and not you deciding to throw everything else away, and especially food you bought elsewhere.  Your father is entitled to the cost of the turkey if he can show reasonable evidence of purchase (might not be too hard; bank statement?  Card statement?). I suspect a small gesture of goodwill is merited as well.

    How much do you want?

    Enough for a trifle maybe??

  • I'd have thought you're father will get that.  I guess a £10 voucher or credit alongside a refund for the turkey is what he'll get.
