Creating granny flat

After reading some posts on here about lodgers and separate kitchens. Its got me thinking about something we may do.
If we were to convert an attached garage with existing access from the house and an existing external door for a relative to move into. With them paying for the conversion.
How do we stand giving them a microwave, fridge and kettle?
Also when they pass away do we have to recompense other  beneficiaries  as the relative paid for the conversion?
Its not an immediate thing but I'd like to know where we would stand.

  • There is a VOA  link in one of the posts - the person that was reported to them posted recently - regarding 'self contained' annexes and council tax - every way you look at it, if there is someone to sit, sleep, eat and wash, I think it is classed as self contained and would attract a banding.

    and 'somewhere' not 'someone'!

It is up to them, not you
    a) whether they give you a loan (and if so on what terms) to cover the conversion costs, or the money is a (non-repayable) gift (subject to Inheritance Tax rues).
    b) who they leave their estate to in their will
