Hi all, hope you've all had a super Christmas. Earlier today I received a text from Royal Mail saying they had tried to deliver a parcel and gave me a link to rearrange delivery. It came up in a thread of other messages I've had from Royal Mail so I clicked the link. It asked for my email and phone number which I put in. It then asked me to put a password to set up an account, again which I did (making sure it did not match any of my existing passwords). It then said someone had sent something to us but not paid enough postage so I needed to pay £2.70. I finally smelled the rat at this point and closed
the page.
So I gave my email, address, phone number (which they had already text me on) and I chose a password - should I be worried? Or am I ok as I stopped short of giving back details?
Feel pretty stupid but it was so convincing in that it came to from the same number as previous Royal Mail texts.
Thanks all!

Nothing much. I expect they're only interested in whatever further info you might give them (e.g. card details) if you tried to make payment.

They could use your email address, which is likely to be used as the login to many services, to try to hack these services. You did well to use a password that was different to any others, but any existing passwords that share words or letter combinations with the password you created might be at more risk, so you might want to change them. This is where having a password manager can be useful. Mine allows me to search all my existing passwords for anything I want to. It also makes it more unlikely that you have passwords that have anything in common.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0 -
As the message came up on the already existing text message thread, it may well be genuine as RM do sometimes use SMS to send notifications of postage charges to pay.

It might be worth contacting your local delivery office (if they are accepting calls) and seeing if they can confirm or deny if they have anything for you.1
