MSE Poll: What are your favourite board games?

Presumably it's more a poll of the games that people have heard of. The vast majority of people will have only ever played the (mostly terrible) mass market games. There are many thousands (really, actually thousands, no exaggeration) of board games rated higher than Monopoly. We had a great game of Terraforming Mars this evening.0

It's a shame people just stick to the popular ones like Monopoly etc, there are so many games to suit everyoneI am not saying that you are wrong but have you given any thought to the fact that Monopoly etc suits quite a lot of people otherwise they would not have been around quite as long as they have been.
Come back in a hundred years or so and see how many of the games that you love to play are still around and also if Monopoly etc are also still on the go.

I played Kingdomino with the family over Christmas. Really good fun and each game only lasts about 30 mins. It can be played from ages 8+ and in 2017 won the coveted Spiel des Jahres award (Game of the year) in Germany0

People play it because there are lot of copies out there and it has a simple to understand "roll and move" mechanic which allows for about as much strategy as Snakes and Ladders.Take a look on Board Game Geek and see what the people who play many board games play and like. Monopoly is ranked about 20,000 in the list of game recommendations, because there are so many games which are better than it.Being the best known game doesn't make it the best game by a long chalk!
if i had known then what i know now0 -
We grew up playing board games and the best ones we kept for our children and grandchildren to play. They love them.
Rich Uncle (stock market game)
Masterpiece ( buying and sellng famous paintings)
The London Game (traveling around London on the Underground, visiting attractions like The Tower of London etc.(The latest version has the latest attractions)
Stay Alive and Avalanche are good games too.0 -
I am LOVING the comments on Monopoly. I was astounded to see it ranked so highly.
Simply put, the game ends with one person feeling smug and everyone else hates them. HATES them.
Other games I feel worth mentioning: Taxi, Bohnanza, Exploding Kittens, Cobra Paw, Rate my Plate...0 -
Our N S & I Guaranteed Bonds mature this month. What should we do with them as to reinvest them only pays 0.4% and the money is locked in for the full term?0

Try Carcassonne, Alhambra, Settlers of Catan, Stone Age, Ticket to Ride which are some of the classic "gateway" games that are not difficult to learn, generally they're suitable for anyone over the age of 8, so even the kids can play (and beat you!) and once you've got into those, you can go on to the "heavier" games.0
