Slow running - malware settings change?

Whilst checking for updates in Settings>Windows Security I saw the section  App & Browser Control. I changed the Reputation-based protection but after this my laptop started running very slowly.
I've Restarted a number of times after trying various things, but still have the problem.
At first I couldn't get back to Windows security settings, but eventually reset Reputation-based protection settings.
In Task Manager, I could see that over half of memory was taken up with   Antimalware Service Executable.
I couldn't end this task  (Access is Denied). I have not set up any users on the laptop, so thought that I would have had access?
What can I try to fix this?

Hi There, this link explains all about the program your talking about. https://www.howtogeek.com/318556/what-is-antimalware-service-executable-and-why-is-it-running-on-my-pc/

In a nut shell it shouldn't be doing scans while your using the PC which would slow down the PC. Additionaly i've found any program of this type which has the "protect browser setting" enabled can slow down the PC so i always disable the browser option.

Also "access denied", have you enabled the hidden adminstrator account on your PC?

  • I disabled the "Realtime protection" in security settings as mentioned in the web article, and Restarted. But the  Antimalware Service Executable task was still taking about 45% of Memory.
It didn't seem to be scanning as CPU was at 0%.
I've always assumed that when I logged in I was taking the role of Administrator. Where would I look for the hidden Administrator account?

Hi there, if you just google "enable hidden admin in windows 10" you'll come across lots of step by step guides on how to do it, it's very easy. As the article says you can disable the built in windows anti malware as long as you have another one installed. Use Malware Bytes, it's free and uses very low memory.
