I shall go back tomorrow and find my previous comment and edit it BUT wanted to dash in to correct myself...
That sock-toe knitting technique, Kitchener stitch, that I said wasn't known before 1920s, so couldn't have been encouraged during World War One - it WAS known beforehand, it WAS used before and during, it WAS actively encouraged for soldiers' socks and I am delighted to be wrong!
I have so much respect for Ruth Goodman's work, and was baffled that she could have got something so wrong - but she hasn't. Her scholarship is as sound and excellent as it always is!
Hurrah - I hated thinking she'd made a mistake - so pleased it was me, not her, who made the mistake!2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

Ooh - that’s interesting. I love what Ruth Goodman does, so I’m pleased to hear she was right!Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.8

Ruth Goodman is one of my favourite people on television. I’ve read some of her books, too. Her “Victorians” book was fascinating.
What was the source that changed your mind, @Laura_Elsewhere?Baileys_Babe said:I love you outfit @Laura_ElsewhereLaura_Elsewhere said:
Very true. In the 2018 thread, I mentioned a pair of T0sco’s stretch jeans that I bought in 2015 and wore until the fabric dissolved on my thighs. Upstairs I have an almost identical pair, bought a couple of months after the first, which I can’t wear. Despite being labelled the same size, they are a size smaller. I’ve held onto them, in the blind hope that I will lose the pounds necessary to go down to that smaller size.

I'm glad you found out the truth about Kitchener stitch! Where did you find out? You'll convert me to an historian yet! 😉2025 Fashion on the ration

I mentioned my disappointment that a historian I respected so much could repeat such an old, worn-out myth, to a friend who knows more than I do about textile history - and she kindly and gently explained to me that, although it's true there's no link to Kitchener per se, that method of producing a smooth toe in socks was known before 1914 albeit more in North America than Britain, and there were patterns before and during the Great War using it, and that there were patterns urging people to knit it as being more comfortable for soldiers!
So.... I am absolutely delighted to be wrong! And Ruth Goodman is restored, unblemished, to my cheerful admiration of her as someone who *really knows her stuff*!
Here is an explanation of that very method, from my friend's 1918 knitting pattern book which is specifically for knitting for soldiers!

Another Ruth Goodman fan here. I used to love the Farm series that she did with the two men, fascinating and all three of the presenters were a pleasure to watch. I wish they would repeat those.

We have recordings of them all... I really am a fan of hers, which is why I'm so relieved!
16th-century - Tales from the Green Valley - was the original, with Peter Ginn and Alex Langlands but a slightly different format, although still the basic notion, living a year authentically on a farm in the Welsh borderlands.
Then there is variously the Tudor Farm (not the same as the Green Valley), Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm, Wartime Farm...2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:
