I know that Grandma had a collection of family flags (given at the funeral of active service members or veterans in the U.S., typically), medals, and dog tags in the chest in the hallway growing up, but no idea where they ended up. I should ask Mom.2023 Fashion on the Ration: Start with 66. Nightdress - 6 = 60 remaining.8

We are not a military family - parents on both sides were too young in WW2 and their fathers were in reserved occupations so not allowed to be called up. Mums older brother was only one that went into army and served mainly in Africa and came home. Her sister was a land girl (mum was a surprise born when her mum was nearly 50) Dad did do his service once he turned 18 but war was over by then, as did his brothers. They all went into RAF but none stayed although dad actually wanted to but being oldest son, he was not allowed his parents wanted him to run the family business. As family on both sides came from Russia early 20th Century there was no other family here in UK all the rest had gone to Netherlands and on mums' side, they begged her parents to send her there when London Bombings started (mum lived in Bethnal Green and was bombed out twice so they moved to Kent eventually) as Netherlands seemed so safe then. Mums, mum could not let her baby go and refused to go with her leaving her husband behind. It turned out for us the best decision as every member of the family were taken to camps and died, only two survived, an aunt and uncle of mums and they were unable to have children due to being experimented on, over 100 men, woman and children from both sides of family gone. So, I wear the poppy not just to remember the military that fell but all the people killed, my family and others. The military could not save my family but I give thanks they stopped other families being almost totally wiped out.
To bring this around to fashion I have made my dogs coats (a few years ago now) that are made from poppy fabric and when we take them out on during run up to 11th and Remembrance Sunday, they wear them in memory of all the animals lost during wars.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

I darned a sock today but more usefully we have now hung our nearly-new bedroom curtains so shall have a cosier room in winter evenings, and also have taken down and re-hung our siting-room curtains on better curtain-rings (the curtains were made by John Lewis for my old bedroom, of lovely cotton velvet - in 1980!!! Talk about buying quality so it lasts!)
Now to learn how to make cauliflower cheese for My Intended... I made him some watercress soup last week using a roux for the fis time and he enjoyed it and I found it surprisingly straightforward, so I'm feeling emboldened to try making a roux for cauliflower cheese for him2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

So, I have new reading for while I’m home working on not getting sick (tonsils are a lovely shade of red today - trying to ward off anything with vitamin C and bone broth).2023 Fashion on the Ration: Start with 66. Nightdress - 6 = 60 remaining.9 -

Oh, and I picked up a small bottle of golden syrup when I was in a specialty shop. Any suggestions as to what to make with it?2023 Fashion on the Ration: Start with 66. Nightdress - 6 = 60 remaining.7 -
Well, if you don’t simply put it on your porridge … 🙂 you’ll find some recipes here https://www.lylesgoldensyrup.com/ I always have some in the cupboard
I use it in flapjacks, Delia Smith’s Gingernuts, and (not something I make these days, but my mum made it) Pineapple Upside Down Pudding. Ooh I’m feeling all nostalgic.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.6
