May I just show off today’s haul? All coupon-free as they were in charity shops: two are 4-ply so one day I might finally make a sock or two.
The ‘Lyscordet’ is, I’m guessing, a more recent and probably finer relative of the ‘Lyscord’ that was the original yarn for the string bag. I resisted buying their entire stock as I’d never make anything else but bags - but I couldn’t not buy some after all the effort I’ve put in trying to find something appropriate for them. I’m guessing the gauge would have resulted in a smaller, less stretchy bag.

Wow that’s quite a haul. I’m banning myself from buying any more yarn or fabric until the dreaded house move is over. Anyway ...
I have just watched an interview with Patrick Grant, it was a free event organised by J Lewis as part of their Festival of Sewing. Now I’ll admit to a certain bias, as I already think he is fabulous from Sewing Bee! He was talking about how he got into the textile industry, very interesting in itself, but then he began talking about the history of textiles and the fact that for years clothes were repaired, looked after, passed on to other people - he had quite a rant about the way things (not just clothes) are discarded without any attempt at repair these days. He’s started something called Community Clothing which aims to produce stuff that is manufactured in the UK, uses locally sourced materials as far as possible (obviously cotton doesn’t grow in our climate!) and which supports the local community. Far too long to go into everything he said, but it really was refreshing to hear what he had to say. Did anybody else watch it? It reinforced my determination to buy secondhand as far as I can, to buy better quality stuff, and to repair clothes, not throw them out. I’ve had a look at the Community Clothing website and while it’s not cheap it’s certainly not extortionate.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. I didn't see it, @PollyWollyDoodle, but it does sound interesting. I wonder if someone will put it up on YouTube?I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Thank you, @Laura_Elsewhere. It’s long, but definitely worth watching- by his own admission he rambles a bit, it must be hard with no visible audience and no interviewer, but I found him very engaging.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. I've acksherly been an' gawn an' bought new things1
Sainsbury's this morning provided a pretty peach-lace underwired bra - I foolishly soaked my last overnight with a navy lace bra, because I have no brain at times despite he PhD, and have been actively looking, online and in shops, for two years for just such a plain but pretty, unpadded, wired half-a-corset (1.5 points).
And how could I resist plimsoles that are yellow with white spots, I ask you? I saw them two weeks ago, and have been weighing them up ever since and decided yesterday that yes, I do want a pair of spotty yellow plimsoles in my life, as I wear plimsoles *A LOT* with ankle-socks, and I definitely would like pretty ones. An alarming 5 points for those, same as for leather shoes that will last years and years, which is why people in the past took care of their things...
I am also partway through making myself a new everyday skirt, knee-length or a little longer, front-fastening, with decent pockets, and less full than some of my near-circular ones.
My Intended had to go and do some maintenance on the plumbing, etc., at his old place (which he still co-owns) so I set myself a little *Sewing Bee* challenge to see how far I could get with making a skirt while he was out. I knew roughly what I wanted to end up with, and had a couple of ideas for fabric, so at 6pm I started: found fabric and chose the green linen; measured, calculated, chalked, cut; machine-sewed all the long seams; attached waistband.
That took two and three-quarter hours, but I had to unpick the waistband twice before finally sewing it on right the third time, so another time it would make better sense to have supper first and sew afterwards. I had a quick re-fuelling stop but it was no good, I'd lost my brain for the evening.
I have a nearly-skirt, though! And I doubt I'd have got that far, had I not timed myself like that. I intend to time the rest of the work to find out how long it takes me: buttonholes and buttons; waistband hook and bar; pockets; bind the raw edges on the inside of seams; pockets, before finally hemming it.2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:
