@PollyWollyDoodle- yep, these would be ideal for laundering washable face-pads - I made something similar but not as nice for my nieces when I gave them loads of them.
I am also pondering making a...how do I word this? A larger bag but in a smaller mesh? For an undies-laundering bag - they always say you should wash your undies inside a lingerie bag, so maybe something like this pattern would work well for that?
One thing about cotton yarn being washable - when I made the washable face-pads I found that the cotton really does shrink over quite a few washes, so I've learnt to use a larger crochet hook and make them a bit floppy and loose, and then they end up just right - and it's the same with my kitchen cloths, crocheted in he same dishcloth-cotton yarn, and no doubt with these bags too...2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

Thanks for your assistance- will update my tally accordingly.
Your photo is lovely- I like the look of that pattern. Will continue my research on Ravelry for patterns. I'm a tall size 20, so measurements will need to be tweaked a bit.
I did some decluttering over the weekend and found some skeins of Fyberspates I'd bought in John Lewis in a past life, which will probably turn out to be enough for a cardi and vest style top. The receipt was from 2014!
We can help you, here, with tweaking a pattern for size, @dreamyd.
@PollyWollyDoodle - no, not a peep from that company. I am not surprised.

A cyber-security friend of mine tells me that the call for knitters and crocheters to piece-make is actually a known scam - basically they reel in an innocent victim to the point where the victim sends a small fee to register and are then sent substandard materials, incomplete instructions, etc., just a token thing so it isn't actually criminal... all they're after is that small fee, but thousands and thousands of victims...2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

I have reported the company concerned to Ravelry but have not heard anything back from them, either. I'm not certain what else I can do.

Wow I have just caught up with 75 posts. First trip of the year in our caravan, only 70 minutes from home in glorious countryside near to Abergavenny.
If I had my laptop with me I would be joining you on the soapbox/stage regarding those pay rates offered and also butcher versus SM produce.
Congrats to Mr Pip on the new job also to (sorry can not go back and check name) on the imminent move to wonderful Yorkshire. Love the string bags and Pip's jumper.
Welcome too to new faces.
Laura I think I may have seen a recipe for the custard biscuits converted to gluten free, will check when I am home, straightforward subs to gf flour don't always work, usually needs a few tweaks.
I hope that you are all enjoying good weather too.The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)6 -
Laura_Elsewhere said:Edit to add: thanks to @Cherryfudge for the original pattern from a wartime magazine - can you remember what magazine or roughly which year, please? I'd love to credit them properly!
The original is worked flat as a rectangle with eyelet bands at each end, folded in half and sewn up the sides; each mesh round is a 4x-yarn-over, but I just found that a bit fiddly and 3x seemed to work well for me. I invented the decrease method, simply as a means of narrowing the bag to a drawstring. I expect it's around as a method then
Basically, this is a very forgiving pattern, and if you find you get on better with some other variation, go for it!
I was sent a photo of the pattern by someone who had posted it on a Social history group on Facebook. I don't know details but I'll try to post her picture of the cover. I suspect it's pre-war but I think @thriftwizard had come across the yarn so she may have a more accurate idea of age.
I like your version of the bag a lot - mine is too big for dense things like oranges, it would stretch to accommodate dozens and be impossible to carry! It's great for bread though. I especially like the way you've gathered it, as that will make it stronger at the base, and the oranges show it off nicely!

I’ve
finished my latest version of ‘the bag’, using a self-striping cotton - very satisfying to work with ☺️. This one is now with its new owner.
