BT SHARES

I am going through all of my dads paperwork as unfortunately he has had to go into a home as he has dementia and is no longer safe at home
we have had to put his house on the market to pay for extortionate care fees
I’m going through his paperwork and various savings and investments and have come across 420 BT SHARES.  These are dated mid 80’s.  Are they worth anything
thanks

  • I am only interpreting the charts but about £600. Which interestingly is about what they were worth when BT was privatised in 1985.
Peak for BT was 1999 when those shares would have been worth 4 grand. Low tide mark 2009, £300.
Not been the best of investments. £600 in Apple would now be worth more than £1 million but some you win.
Sorry to hear about your Dad.
  • The 1984 BT shares should have been replaced by shares in mmO2 and BT Group plc following a demerger in 2001 so if you come across what's happened to 420 of each of those shares in later records then the 80s certificate is redundant.

As LobsterMemory says, there have been several events that have happened since the mid eighties. I still have lots of old BT share certificates, but I no longer own any BT shares! So don't get your hopes up until you've contacted the registrars to find out if any are registered in his name.
