Bank Rejected Cheque Because Issuer Used My 'Abbreviated' Name?

I recently received a cheque. But, my bank rejected it, because the issuer had used the abbreviation of my name. Not a nickname as such, and the issuer has never called me by my full name in my whole life - everybody knows me by my 'abbreviated' name. Is this the bank's correct procedure? Can I ask the bank to accept both versions of my name?
For example (btw. this isn't my name): it would be like writing Reggie instead of Reginald.

Are you talking about an abbreviated first name (eg 'Chris', 'Bev', etc) or last name?0

Which bank ? How did you pay it in ? How much was it for ? How was it rejected - over the counter or at the back office stage ?
