Is it true that issuing banks wont honour a cheque after 6 months

It's a Payable Order not a cheque or warrant. Although from the perspective of the banks it's processed very much like a cheque. Things work a little differently when issued by certain parts of the government - including a clear end date. I think some are only three months. And the pay/no pay decision is taken by the issuing department in some cases rather than their bank.wmb194 said:
That sounds like a warrant rather than a cheque. Warrants will state how long they are valid for.p00hsticks said:I've just paid in a cheque issued by the DVLA for a road tax refund, and it clearly states on the front that 'HM Paymaster General will pay the amount shown if this payable order is presented within 6 Months'(their bold)
(I ought to remember which depts do warrants vs. payable orders but don't! I think NS&I might have been warrants - because they have specific legislation https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1972/765/part/3/made/data.xht?view=snippet&wrap=true . Most of the rest are payable orders if centrally banked, or standard cheques if local/commercial arrangements)

Some 20 years ago. Our divisional policy was to automatically place a stop on a cheque once it reached 6 months old and hadn't been presented. We used to issue some 750 cheques a week on average.1

I had an almost 12 month-old cheque for £45 , a refund from Plusnet . I checked with the Co-op bank and Plusnet(just by chance, but they said they would reissue if there was a problem) with both saying go ahead. Instead of going into a branch my husband posted that and another cheque , also a little dated, with the money being creditted to our account quite quickly.0
