Tenant's notice to landlord?

Hi Guys,
I have recently decided to move out and want to give a notice to my landlord. I am currently on a periodic tenancy. I preferably do not want to give a month's notice but a shorter one if I can. Do I need to negotiate with the landlord? I am just concerned about my deposit. Is there a format/template to issue a notice to the landlord?
Background - My landlord issued me a notice 8 months back but I did not vacate then and he did not take any court action.
Thanks in advance for any helpful responses.

Were you served a Section 21 or Section 8 eviction notice in writing? If you were, what date was the notice issued on and what date did it specify to leave on?

I was given a section 21 notice but this was a long time back and it expired after 2 months. This was given after my fixed term tenancy expired. However, the landlord never took any court action and it is more than 6 months since that notice expired.A_Lert said:Were you served a Section 21 or Section 8 eviction notice in writing? What does that have to do with the tenant serving notice?A_Lert said:Were you served a Section 21 or Section 8 eviction notice in writing? If you were, what date was the notice issued on and what date did it specify to leave on?

Legally speaking you need to give the correct amount of notice. The correct amount will depend on whether you have a contractual or statutory periodic tenancy. Read the information in the link Slithery has provided.Seanmac said:Hi Guys,

Thanks in advance for any helpful responses. You are of course free to negotiate a shorter notice period with your landlord but he is under no obligation to agree.3 -
Thanks for the responses. The landlord agreed for a date to vacate.0

Thanks in advance for any helpful responses.Assuming this is an AST in England/Wales and rent is paid monthly, you have either a Monthly Contractual Periodic Tenancy, or a Monthly Statutory Periodic Tenancy. Your notice period depends on which, so - what does your tenancy agreement say happens at the end of the fixed term, if anything? My post here explains more:Post 4: Ending/renewing an AST: what happens when a fixed term ends? How can a LL or tenant end a tenancy? What is a periodic tenancy? But that is the legal minimum notice you must serve. You can, of course, agree any notice period, or end date, you wish with the landlord - provided he agrees.Your LL's notice 8 months ago is irrelevant. There is no template. A letter is fine.Dear Mr LL,Please acept this letter as notice to end my tenancy at the above address. I shall be ending the tenancy on [date].I should be grateful if you could advise me where/how to return the keys.Kindly arrange an inspection, if required, as soon as practicable after that date and release my deposi thereafter.I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for your help over the last few years/months,Yours sincerely,S Mac
