Quiet vacuum cleaner recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a quiet (as quiet as quiet as possible) vacuum cleaner?? I live with someone who has a complete and total aversion to noise and cannot bear or at any point tolerate the noise of a vacuum cleaner. I have looked a loads of vacuums online which say they're quiet but when I read the reviews I always come across a few who mention the noise! I really don't want to spend out and then get stuck with another cleaner which is too noisy. Many thanks for any recommendations.

Only way to do this is to 'audition' the cleaner in person - i.e. in a shop with it working. Not very easy to do at the moment in most places, though.
We selected a Miele Cat & Dog cleaner that way many years ago now. SWMBO has an aversion to noisy appliances and surroundings. It is quieter than others but still nowhere near silent.
EDIT https://www.which.co.uk/news/2018/03/noisy-vacuum-cleaners-flout-eu-rules/ is worth a read - the quiet ones often don't work as well.1 -
Thank you - will have a read.0

We also have a Miele vacuum and it is certainly the quietest we have had by a long way. As Rodders53 says, it is not silent or anywhere close. Maybe worth investing in noise cancelling headphones for the person who can't cope with noise. Wearing them when the vacuum is in use could help a lot. I used noise cancelling headphones on flights and they made a huge difference.

I think as Rodders says it may be a case of trying some out.We have recently moved from a Dyson to a Shark NV801. I don't know if the Dyson was particularly noisy but the Shark is soo much quieter. I think it would definitely be worth a look.1

There are no quiet vacuum cleaners - at least not those that pick much up. Could the person not go elsewhere whilst hoovering is going on?

I would accept "there are no silent vacuum cleaners" but some are very much quieter than others. I can carry on having a conversation, or listening to radio or TV with the Miele going right next to me. No chance of doing that with the Hoover brand we had before it.Grenage said:There are no quiet vacuum cleaners - at least not those that pick much up. Noise cancelling headphones or even a good pair of ear defenders while vacuuming is a very good idea if the person will wear such items.2

Cheaper to buy ear defenders for the person than trying in vain for a quiet cleaner. My son is the same due to autism. He is sent upstairs with ear defenders2

Thank you all. I'll have a look at Shark and Miele, but it looks like the answer might be the headphones. (No, he only goes out occasionally and then it's always at a time when I'm out at work so I never get any time to myself to make a noise!!)1
