Linking savings account to my debit card

I opened up a Santander Everyday Saver account and I think I linked it to my student account debit card. I'm just confused what this actually means. My "cards" page on the app shows two cards, but they are identical (same number and expirery date). What does linking the account to the card actually do?

As far as I can see, to withdraw cash from your savings account at an ATM you can either request a separate cashcard to be sent to you, or you can use your existing debit card.

If the latter, I would imagine the ATM will ask you which account you want to draw money from - your current account or your savings account.

As above.  With 2 accounts linked to a card a Santander cash machine will ask which account you wish to withdraw from / pay into.  Any other cash machine will withdraw from the account printed on the front of the card.
