STOCKS AND SHARES ISA

I have 20k to invest in a stocks and shares ISA

Can leave it it for 7-10 years

Looking if possible for 3-5% return per year although I am aware of the risks that my investment can go down

Any views as to which one to choose, also what is the yearly overall management charges

Sounds like the multi-asset funds could be ideal for you. In which case I suggest you read up on and look at Youtube videos of Vanguard LifeStrategy, L&G, HSBC Global Strategy funds, Blackrock and others. Ultimately it all depends on your appetite for risk, but most of the main multi-asset funds have various degrees of risk. I'd expect you'd be able to obtain a 3-5% annual return over that period of time. Sure, investments can go down. Everybody says that by way of a disclaimer and though past performance is no guarantee, it still can be a good indicator. If Liverpool win 10 consecutive games and they are due to play Gillingham who let's say have lost 10 consecutive games, I'd put my money on a Liverpool win, even though someone will say there's no guarantee!

There are a few online sites where one can compare costs of all major investment firms/platforms. Have a look at iweb also, part of the Halifax/Lloyds Group. They have very competitive charges, especially now, before their opening account fee is raised after New Year.

The choice should not be so much about which S&S ISA provider to use (although the one with the lowest charges for holding assets should be preferred), but what assets to hold within the S&S ISA wrapper.

You won't find any asset that will guarantee a 3%+ return, but historically, equities have returned 6%+ pa over 10 year periods. You need to keep your total charges to less than 1% because if your return is only 3% pa, you are giving away 33% of your return in charges!

To reduce risk, you can invest in well diversified funds investing only in equities, or invest in funds that hold a mixture of equities and bonds. You can also invest in finds that track particular markets or indexes in a passive manner, or are actively managed to try to beat a particular market or index.

My most important piece of advice is not to let the choice available place put you off. Buy something. Then learn about investing as you go along. The Vanguard LifeStrategy funds are well regarded, in part because of their low charges. I would suggest you have a look at the Vanguard LifeStrategy 60% Equity fund as an example of a fund that might be a good default choice to get anyone started.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
