Pet insurance

Options
Hi, I have a 12 month old pup and my pet insurance renewal has arrived and the price has increased by £15 a month and I haven't made a claim. If I don't renew and the insurance expires. Can I then rejoin with the same company a day later and be classed as a new customer and get a much better deal?

Possibly, but you would have no cover for illness for the following 14 days.

If an illness occurs then that and anything they deem linked won't be covered.

Only you can judge if that risk is worth it.

My renewal has also arrived, premium bumped up £23.  I haven't claimed.  My cat has since developed a mild condition that could get worse in future.  I feel I'm being held to ransom by my insurance company as I now can't shop around for a better deal.  I can't imagine how much the premium would increase if I did claim.

Often a new insurance policy will include things like online discount, new customer offer etc.

After 12 months even with no claims with those removed the price rise will be noticeable.

When I realised that a policy with a new company won't pay out for 14 days, I started my new policy 14 days before the old one expired.  When my pup was 2 years old, I realised that ear, eye and stomach problems would not be covered as he had suffered with all of those although we'd never claimed on the policy thinking that it would increase our policy cost the following year.  My current policy is less than £12 per month and my excess is £250.  I decided that I need a policy for major issues (diabetes, broken bones, cancer - that kind of thing) but that I would self insure for smaller issues.  I now buy 2 premium bonds a month and will use that money for the minor bills should I need to.  If I don't need to, then I have saved the money and not given it to an insurance company.  When the pot has built up to several thousand, I will stop buying any pet insurance.
