Thanks for commenting everyone. I will ask him directly about an EICR in the new year as we said we would have him back once we had been here a while to see where might need some extra sockets. We also need three light fittings changed. I'm sure after seeing all the wiring to these jobs it should give him an idea what the wiring is like0

What I don't understand is why you " initially called him due to a short which tripped RCD (water leak from washing machine into socket) ". Surely a plumber or washing machine repair guy would have been more appropriate? The socket would dry out naturaly and the RCD be re-set....If he was not very forthcoming about your other queries on the wiring, why not get a 2nd opinion? Either use a local recommendation (checking qualifications too) or search for a local NICEIC sparky.

Ah well we had either forgot to put the discharge pipe in or it was pushed out as we pushed the machine into place. So I knew the machine itself was working.
Also when he came round he moved the socket from floor level to waist level so it was a little safer in the cupboard.
Looking back I could probably have left it to dry out and reset but I think the water + electricity just triggered the want of having a professional check it out

An EICR isn't necessarily needed but would give you peace of mind if he completed some checks at least
It sounds like the conservatory needs wiring better as it sounds like it is wired on some sort of extension cable from the kitchen. A more permanent solution would be better. He may be able to extend the current ring circuit or run a separate ring if there is space in the consumer unit1 -
Careful of electricians and their cleverly devised scheme of charging you £200 plus for a quote for a rewire, which they justify by naming it a "Condition Report".
Funny how one moment plastics are going to end the world as we know it by not breaking down for thousands of years but if you use them to coat metal wires and embed them safely within the walls of your house away from UV light and other such things that cause them to degrade you instantly condemn them to degrade at the rate at which an electrician needs a new payday!1 -
Yes I'm always a bit nervous if I don't have a tradesperson I feel I can fully trust on a topic I know next to nothing about.0

I always give an honest assessment of the electrical installation, and advise sensible remedial actions. It is extremely rare that I say the installation is time expired and should be rewired, but if that's my conclusion then I will say it.
