I owe an old bank account £216 from a cheque from 2017 that claimed money back.

I wanted to know if anyone had any advice or could help? I have recieved a message from an old bank account (I switched bank accounts last year from santander to M&S) which states that I owe them £216 because of a cheque that was cashed incorrectly in 2017. The cheque over all was for over £800, however the fraud team have looked into it and said that the reason for this is the company didn't take their 'cut' from the money I was given. I have no way of providing evidence for this as it was years ago. However I feel that this is a bit dodgy and that I do not owe them money.

  • What company didn't take what cut from the money?
  • 2017 definitely wasn't 'years ago', switching banks the year later means that it's all in a recent timeframe, bank/financial paperwork should be retained for several years, the businesses involved would be able to send you account documents surely.

Is this a PPI claim (or something similar) that you made through a third party?  If so, you probably DO owe the third party the fee agreed when you signed up with them.

What fraud team? (i.e. who told you)

What do they mean by "cut"?

because of a cheque that was cashed incorrectly in 2017.

I assume you mean presented rather than encashed.    However, what do you mean by incorrectly?

However I feel that this is a bit dodgy and that I do not owe them money.

Who is saying you owe them money?
