book token refund but no longer have the card

Would appreciate some advice re. a book token that's been spent (and then binned) about a month ago.
It turns out that the book wasn't available, so a refund was requested, and given, but the refund went back onto the card.
So the retailer did nothing wrong, but the problem now is, the card (book token) was thrown away, thinking it was no longer of any use because the money had been spent. So the refund money's sitting on an unavailable card. I believe the card has a code on the back of it, a bit like a cvc code, which presumably would be required for future purchases.
Any ideas what can be done to salvage the money? Or is it gone for good :-(

Have you asked the retailer? Can't they transfer it to a new card?

Yes, am awaiting their reply. I expect they might allow it to be used against future purchases on their site, but not sure. Anyway, thought I'd ask on here in case anyone has any other ideas or suggestions.
