Presume the light switches on and off,how many times a night is it activated.
  • I would ask them to remove and, if they didn't do so immediately, I would remove it myself. It drives me nuts when people who own their houses somehow think they have more rights than their neighbours who rent.

I think people are getting a bit worked up about a simple practical issue. I’m sure that the OP and his neighbours can work this out amicably.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Are they?  Aren't the replies saying to try working it out with neighbour?

Indeed, some are. And, then, there's:
"I would ask them to remove and, if they didn't do so immediately, I would remove it myself. It drives me nuts when people who own their houses somehow think they have more rights than their neighbours who rent. "

    So that's one person, then.

Lights usually come on when its dark, when its dark, you generally close your curtains; a lit up room can be seen clearly from the outside, most people dont want this. Closing the curtains also adds the benefit of keeping heat in / security etc.

I would simply close the curtains. Lights don't come on during the day, and if they do, they need adjusting. The installation of a light indicates also that someone will "manage" the alleyway, which is another win, i see a win-win situation here. Just close the curtains when its dark.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, to answer a few of the questions the angle would mean moving the light down the gate would mean it would have to be around knee hight so I couldn't see it so I don't think that would work.

They hardly ever go through there at night which is why I was surprised that they put one up in the first place.

The light is not super bright and doesn't light up much of the path so I'm assuming its more to show where the gate is but they already have some dim fairy lights on the gate so they can see where it is. The problem is from where I sit it's very noticeable in the corner of my eye. Plus it's not exactly pitch black out there so I just don't see the need for it.

It looks like it has a daylight sensor on it and it came on when it got dark but did turn off later so I'm not 100 sure what activates it. I'll have to see what it does tonight.

I think the best bet is to talk to them but as I mentioned I'm more frustrated that they put it up without speaking to me and the way they reacted when I complained about the tree cutting makes me think they are a bit entitled so I just wanted to know my rights before speaking to them.

    Thanks all.

I wonder if they are solar lights. Mine don't light up for long at the moment as there is very little daylight to charge them during the day.
