Pet surgery

Hi, I really hope someone can help / give their opinion. 

To give a quick bit of background we took out some pet insurance when we first got our dog - no pre-existing conditions. We had a few trips the vets over the next 18 months where we learned he had some allergies, never claimed anything. 

On 1st December we paid our monthly DD for the insurance and I’ve been told that covers us to 28th Dec. I cancelled this insurance on 2nd Dec to upgrade to a higher level of cover with the same provider, had to tell them about the allergies so that’s an exclusion on the new policy but obviously remains off the old once due to it being cancelled. With Animal Friends. 

Now, he’s having surgery on 23rd Dec which is something that relates to his allergies so I’m hoping as we are covered on the old policy until 28th and that policy has no exclusions the insurance should cover it. Will be well over £500. I called them and them seemed very hesitant and wouldn’t say anything really, kept saying we have an exclusion for allergies but I kept saying that is only on the second ‘new’ policy and then in the end she seemed to understand but couldn’t get it to start with. 

Apparently the vet claims directly so I’m just very concerned we will need to pay a large amount over Christmas. Also we won’t know until 3 days after the vet submits the claim which will be well after surgery. 

Please can anyone let me know if they think the insurance will cover it?

Since it is Animal friends  I wouldn't count on it. They tend to find ways not to pay out.
I know Petplan pay out for any treatment within  the policy period even if claimed outside it.
