Is Shop Pay safe/legit?

There's something I'd like to buy online with my credit card but the only option in this particuar store is to use Shop Pay. I've never heard of it, and googling doesn't seem to indicate anywhere I can look to tell me whether it's legit.

Is it safe/legit? If so, how do we know that?

Well you obviously didn't google very well as I did a quick google search and it came up as part of Shopify Payments.

To enable Shop Pay, your store needs to use Shopify Payments.

Shop Pay is an accelerated checkout that lets customers save their email address, credit card, and shipping and billing information so that they can complete their transaction faster the next time they are directed to the Shopify checkout. This can save your customers time when they check out, especially if they've already opted in to Shop Pay on any Shopify store. If your store offers a local pickup or delivery option, then customers can choose the option during checkout with Shop Pay.

Seems a lot of retailers use it

Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.
  • I did see it was to do with Shopify payments but I've never heard of them either. Is Shopify trusted? If so, how do we know?

Trustpilot is not very complementary about them to say the least, although to be fair I don't think trustpilot is complementary about anyone.

Have a read of the reviews on trustpilot and see what you think also bear in mind and a lot of posting on trustpilot is negative because that is why they go to trustpilot
  • Thanks, jsmith - generally I'm not happy to save my details with someone I haven't heard of and I wouldn't trust Trustpilot - I'm surprised there's no official source of info on what's a legit financial business and what isn't. That's what I'm looking for, really.

Shopify is one of the biggest e-commerce platforms in the world. Definitely legitimate. You may not have heard of them because it’s not a consumer facing platform. Shopify provide the software for a number of retail websites. They are particularly popular with small businesses because the platform makes it quick and easy to set up and manage a online store.
  • Shop Pay is not safe - Scam ongoing currently where people buy your email, go to shop pay, ask them to authenticate via email address, use the code from that to log in to shop pay and then buy through shops on Shop Pay with your cards.

REMOVE YOUR CARDS AFTER EACH PURCHASE. We have lost circa £500 over multiple orders and it's an absolute nightmare to get all of these back, even with screenshotted proof of everything.

They then go into your emails, delete confirmation from shops/shop pay and then email the shop insinuating that they 'forgot to change the address'.

Even if they have your email address, how would they get the authentication code if it was sent to your email unless they also have access to your email which is not a Shop Pay issue?

Or do you mean it was changed so they can get the code?

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

    So are you a retailer?

So if these fraudsters buy your emails, just how to they get into the owners email account to get the code?
