If the opening/closing gas reading is within 125M3s of your actual reading, then both suppliers are required to use it to open and close your accounts. To put this into perspective, this equates to 1400kWhs of gas. Even if your new tariff was 1p/kWh more than your old tariff, the difference would equate to £14.
if the difference is greater than 125M3s, then contact your new supplier and ask them to initiate an Agreed Readings Dispute.
The above limit has been in place for many years. Some Consumers do not bother to read their meters; many get it wrong as do meter readers, and some Consumers lie if they can see financial advantage in doing so. Smart metering should in time result in changes to the present system of opening/closing readings.
