Smartthings Hub

Hi all,
So I've been looking into getting something to detect water leaks but I didn't want a audible alert, just a notification sent to my mobile as I have it with me anyway so no real need to be startled by an alarm etc. So I found the Samsung smartthing water leak detector which requires the smartthings hub but I see some places are showing it as either out of stock or discontinued.  I have also seen a Aeotec smartthings hub and they look identical.  Are Aeotec taking over the Samsung Smartthings hub? I see the original Samsung smartthings items i.e. water leak detector readily available.  Will they work with the Aeotec smartthing hub or only the Samsung one?
Thanks
Kev

As I live alone and i'm out most of the day, it would be nice to get an alert if say for example, fridge started leaking as opposed to coming home at night to a totally flooded kitchen etc :)
    Thanks

  • Samsung are moving out of the hardware game for the Smartthings brand, and Aeotec indeed have taken on the contract for manufacturing the hubs.
I've been tracking the price of the hub for a few months now, and it just seems to be going up as stock levels dwindle, but have only seen 1 or 2 websites stocking the Aetotec one. Hoping that once Aeotec hits the likes of Amazon and Currys that we'll start to see some reasonable prices again.
If you don't fancy paying the expense, Aqara (by Xiaomi) have a water sensor which you can pick up for around $14 from AliExpress and pair with their hub ($25)

Your fridge (and freezer) does not hold enough water as part of the cooling process to flood the kitchen.
If its a fancy unit that has a water dispenser or an ice maker, those don't hold a lot of water themselves, certainly not enough to totally flood the kitchen.

Due to the way frost free fridges work any "leakage" is almost always caused when the hole at the back of the fridge that the water drips into is blocked.  If enough of this water comes out of the fridge (if it can get past the seal) and you have a traditional unit with freezer on the bottom, it can only go into the freezer where it'll freeze.  It won't go anywhere the floor.

The washing machine on the other hand is more likely to flood.

But the ultimate question is - if you live alone and you get a notification that something's leaked, and you're at work, what are you going to be able to do about it?  May not be considered an "emergency" at work because the seals have failed on the fridge?

Thanks for replies, it seems the Aqara produces an alarm and sends a notification, can you turn the alarm off via the mobile app or turn that feature off and just have the notification to mobile?
@Neil_Jones Thanks for reply, my plan was to get a few of them to place around washing machine, fridge, kitchen sink etc.  I guess the problem is, if I was at work and got a notification, I wouldn't know how much or little water there was so I suspect work would allow me go to as its not something that's going to happen regularly, it will only be as the machines get older etc.  Alternatively, I could always call my parents to pop in and take a look.

Does the Samsung water leak detector with with the Aeotec device or do you need a Aeotec water leak detector?
    Thanks

If you're paranoid about a water leak, simply turn your stop tap off every day when you leave for work.
You can even get electronic versions

Best bit of MSE advice this year.
    The OP is overcomplicating things.
You get all these wizmos & gizmos to tell you all sorts of things via your mobile phone then you are somewhere with no signal ??
    House flooded etc etc.
