Travel Insurance - Stuck in NY

My GF went to U.S a few weeks ago and developed an ear infection which got worse and resulted in surgery. This meant she had to go through various emergency visits and procedures - during this time the insurance has accepted to reimburse but only when she returns to the UK. So far it has cost over £30,000 and it looks like her flight will need to be pushed back and more procedures are required (they may have found a more severe condition aswell - undergoing testing). We are basically out of cash and was wondering is there anyway to for the insurance company to pay upfront? why do they need her to return and then reimburse it within 2 weeks?

Any thoughts would help

For minor issues and ailments that is not unexpected as the process. I think however your girlfriends situation has passed this point.  Have you kept the insurers point of contact up to date with the ongoing situation and mounting medical bills?  I think you need to call and update them to the situation, explain you don’t have those open and available funds and ask that they take up the matter with the hospital or medical facility that your girlfriend is getting care from. They hopefully will take on the charges and settle payment direct with the hospital.

Dealing with a claim once in its entirety reduces the operational costs and enables the most accurate results... people buy insurance almost exclusively on price and so minimising costs is a key activity.

Ultimately speak to your insurers and advise them of both the ongoing situation and funding issues.
  • Pick up the phone, you need to speak to the insurance company and not a bunch of strangers on a forum. :)
