Reversed pending transaction to Ikea

Options
Hi, wondering if anyone can shed any light - spoken with bank and not had much joy.
Popped into Ikea Wednesday last week and bought some odds and ends nothing of note but I like a scout about in the bargain corner 🤫. Anyway spent about £30 and so used tap and pay no problems and went on my way. Checked bank account on Monday still showing pending transaction thought strange usually 2 days, checked again this morning still pending and thought very strange,  checked tonight 10.30 and it's disappeared. Not debited from the account and my available balance is up by the same amount. I can't find the receipt (think I chucked it in bin) spoke to the bank who have said they can see it has been reversed but can't give me a transaction code because as far as there concerned there is no transaction been made.
🤯🤯 Mind blown.
Asked how long a merchant can apply for payment and bank said I need to ask Ikea. I am at a loss. Kind of feel like a thief tbh but how can I go to Ikea and say "erm I haven't got proof of you not charging me for a few bits of spare wood doors and an aloe Vera plant but you haven't" Any ideas? I've read about Ikea charging twice but can't seem to find anything else.

  • Don't worry - I'm pretty sure that the transaction will debit in the next few days.
To answer your question - they have 6 months to debit your card without notice and up to 6 years by other methods.

Even though the pending transaction dropped off after a week, the fact that you originally authorised them to take the money means that they can still claim it for at least six months if I recall correctly, so work on the basis that they'll be back for it and make sure you have enough in the account to cover it.

The vast majority of card payments are now submitted for settlement in real time, or at least same or next working day, but it's not unheard of for the odd one to be delayed if there's been some sort of technical glitch - I made a transaction in April last year that didn't appear on my credit card statement until August....

Don't you long for the good old days when we all got our bank statements every six months and no one worried about how many days a single transaction took as long as everything added up in the end?

    Probably just me.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Can't say I long for those days, but there's no doubt that real-time access to vast quantities of information at one's fingertips brings with it heightened expectations, which won't always be reasonable....
