Hi I have recently moved into a property and took meter readings when I did. Do I need to contact the existing supplier who the previous owner was with or can I immediately go to a new different supplier (possibly the one from my previous address)?

You are currently on an expensive 'deemed tariff' so you need to register immediately with the existing supplier and submit the meter reading from when you took possession.
Only after that can you initiate a switch.  Make sure you are on the Electoral Register otherwise your switch may fail.
Start comparing with Citizens Advice and 'Switch with Which?' and remember that separate suppliers are probably cheaper.

You need to contact the supplier(s) who are currently supplying the property. Open an account with them, providing them with your opening meter readings.  Once done you are then able to switch to whomever you choose.

Hi thanks for your responses. So I can switch freely and without charge should I pick their flexible tariff with no exit fees? Also will they not do a credit search and likewise my new supplier when I switch?

Presumably on the ER from the previous home?

Yes, you can switch without charge as long as you choose a tariff without exit fees.
